Stay mindful while traveling with these three practices: meditative walking, creative journaling, and reducing screen time. Enjoy the moment! As humankind often thinks of the past or future, very few of us practice mindfulness when travelling. No shame, but as we travel, we can get overwhelmed by the new experience, or we often worry about anything in the future waiting for us or simply the unresolved we left before we embarked on our journey.
This reading offers three pieces of advice on thoroughly enjoying the moment while travelling. Let's get started!
Practice walking meditation
Yes, you read it right. Of course, we encourage people to practice traditional meditation by closing their eyes in silence for 5 minutes in the morning. But this time, we invite you to practice something alternative that will allow you to connect all your senses to your environment. A meditative walk means getting involved with each of your senses as you roam around. What type of noises are there? Is it colourful? What do the streets smell like? Are you enjoying that sip of water? Can you feel the soil of your feet on the ground? Answering these questions will help you stay present and enjoy the place you are at with peace of mind.
Keep a creative journal
Journaling allows you to express your thoughts and explore your emotions. But the best part is that it will help you dump everything that is on your mind, giving you clarity and space to enjoy and absorb the rest of your day wandering around. Make this practice a morning routine: add photos, draw on it, feel free to practice your creativity, and stay present with it.
Reduce your screen time
We live in a modern world where social media is often used to share our experiences while travelling. It is a great and fun tool to connect with others; however, it can take much of our time as we get consumed by other people's realities. Spending too much time on our phones will not only make us feel a bit more stressed, but it also will take some of the time we can spend being mindful while exploring and discovering new places.
By embracing these practices, you will have a more joyful experience at your next destination. They will also help your nervous system feel at ease while facing some of the challenges travelling has by nature. So get out there and make the most of your adventures!
